Author Guidelines

Before you submit

Confirm that your work is original, is not published elsewhere, and is not under consideration by another journal.

Manuscript format

Microsoft Word (.docx). PDF is accepted for initial submission only. A4, 1.5 line spacing, 12pt Times New Roman or equivalent. Continuous line numbering, pages numbered.

Structure

Upload two files. First, a title page, submitted separately and not part of the anonymised manuscript. It carries the title, all authors with affiliations and ORCID iDs, corresponding author contact details, acknowledgements, funding, and the conflict of interest declaration. Second, the anonymised manuscript, containing the title, abstract, keywords, body and references.

Abstract and keywords

250 words maximum, structured for empirical papers: purpose, methods, findings, implications. Four to six keywords.

Body

Empirical papers: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion. Theoretical and review papers may be structured differently but must be clearly signposted.

Word counts

See the section descriptions below. Counts exclude references and appendices.

References

APA 7th edition. Include DOIs where available.

Tables and figures

Numbered, titled, and cited in the text. Supplied in editable form rather than as images. Figures at 300 dpi minimum.

Language

English. British or American spelling are both accepted, but be consistent. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have the manuscript read by a fluent colleague before submitting. We do not reject work for language alone, and we will not decline a paper whose substance is sound because the prose needs editing.

Anonymisation

Remove author names from the manuscript file, from the document properties, and from self-citations. Refer to your own prior work in the third person.

Ethics and consent

State ethical approval and informed consent in the methodology section, including the approving body and reference number.

Data availability

Every submission must include a data availability statement. Where data cannot be shared, give the reason.

Generative AI

Disclose any use of generative AI tools, stating which tool was used and for what purpose. AI tools cannot be listed as authors.

Charges

There is no submission fee. Nothing is payable when you submit, and nothing is payable if your article is declined.

Accepted articles carry an article processing charge of USD 100, invoiced after acceptance and before publication. There are no page charges, colour charges or supplementary fees of any kind.

Authors without access to research funding may request a full waiver. Waivers are granted on request, with no documentation or means test. Requesting a waiver has no bearing on the editorial decision, and reviewers and handling editors are never informed of an author's payment status.

Submission Preparation Checklist

The submission is original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.

The manuscript is in Microsoft Word (.docx) format.

The manuscript is anonymised: author names removed from the text, from self-citations, and from the file properties.

A separate title page has been prepared with full author details, affiliations and ORCID iDs.

The abstract is 250 words or fewer and includes four to six keywords.

References follow APA 7th edition and include DOIs where available.

Tables and figures are supplied in editable form, numbered and cited in the text.

Ethical approval and informed consent are stated in the methodology, where applicable.

A data availability statement is included.

Any use of generative AI tools has been disclosed.

All authors have approved the submission and meet the journal's authorship criteria.

Articles

Original empirical or theoretical research making a substantive contribution to social science knowledge.

Empirical papers should state a clear research question, describe methods in enough detail for another researcher to assess or repeat the work, and situate findings within existing literature. Theoretical papers should advance or contest an established position rather than summarise it.

6,000 to 9,000 words excluding references. Structured abstract of 250 words.

Double anonymous peer review by at least two reviewers.

Review Articles

Systematic or critical reviews synthesising a body of literature.

Submissions must state the search strategy, databases consulted, date range, and inclusion and exclusion criteria. Reviews that summarise without synthesising, or that omit their method, are declined at screening.

7,000 to 12,000 words excluding references.

Double anonymous peer review by at least two reviewers.

Research Notes

Short reports of a single significant finding, a methodological innovation, or a replication of previously published work.

Held to the same standards of rigour as full articles but narrower in scope. Suitable for results that are sound and worth recording but do not warrant full-length treatment. Replications are explicitly welcome, including those that fail to reproduce the original finding.

2,500 to 4,000 words excluding references.

Double anonymous peer review.

Editorial

Commissioned by the editorial team. Not peer reviewed.

Editorials address matters of concern to the journal's readership: developments in the field, research policy, publishing practice, or the journal's own conduct. Unsolicited editorials are not accepted — contact the Editor-in-Chief with a proposal.

800 to 2,000 words.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

Data controller

Digital Rights Kenya, publisher of African Review of Social Sciences, is the data controller for personal data collected through this site. Enquiries and requests should be sent to editor_in_chief@africanopenresearch.org.

What we collect

  • Name, email address and institutional affiliation
  • ORCID iD, where supplied
  • The content of submissions, reviews and correspondence with the editorial office
  • Basic usage data such as article views and downloads, recorded in aggregate

Why we collect it

To operate peer review, to publish accepted work, to contact authors and reviewers about submissions, and to meet our obligations to indexing, preservation and persistent identifier services.

We do not use personal data for automated decision-making, and we do not profile users.

Who we share it with

Reviewer and author identities are not disclosed to one another. The journal operates double anonymous peer review, and identities are visible only to the editorial team handling the submission.

Published article metadata, including author names, affiliations and ORCID iDs, is shared with indexing services, Crossref and digital preservation networks. This is a condition of publication and is what makes an article findable and citable.

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for marketing.

How long we keep it

Account and submission records are retained for as long as the journal operates, since they form part of the record of how a published article came to be published.

Published articles and their metadata are permanent. This is deliberate: the scholarly record must remain stable and citable, and preservation networks hold copies independently of us.

Your rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 you may request:

  • access to the personal data we hold about you
  • correction of data that is inaccurate or incomplete
  • erasure of data, where retention is not required for the integrity of the publication record
  • that we stop processing your data, where processing is not necessary to our obligations as a publisher

Write to editor_in_chief@africanopenresearch.org. We respond within 30 days.

Published articles cannot be withdrawn on request. Where an article is retracted, the retraction notice remains part of the permanent record, as required by publication ethics.
